Dursdan forced himself to move forward, pulling the gate shut quietly behind him. He glanced frantically around the courtyard hoping to see his father or brother. No one else was there. He was alone with the beast. A trickle of sweat dribbled into his eyes. Dursdan blinked to clear his vision. He swallowed and began creeping around the edge of the courtyard. The dragon's eyelids were mostly closed but Dursdan could feel the Silver's gaze following him along the path. Tiny pinpricks ran down his spine. He tried to melt into the lengthening shadows of the inner wall. His throat tightened and a great inner drum pounded in his ears. He was almost to the door. Sinotio snorted. Dursdan jumped the last few steps and fled inside.
Dursdan would rather be a farmer and have nothing to do with the magical beasts that protect the Valley, but his father is a Dragon Lord. As the first born son, he's expected to follow in his father's footsteps. When his father risks his life to obtain a rare golden egg, Dursdan is forced to carry it. But the threads of the past have already woven him into their mysterious patterns and he must protect the egg from a wizard who would enslave Gold Magic.

A young boy destined by birth right to become a dragon rider who is terrified of dragons. A younger brother angered by his lot in life to be "just a farmer" and not a dragon rider. A wizard stuck in their world wanting badly to find a way back into the wizard realm and willing to find a way at any cost. A gold dragon that ties all the characters together.A solid addition to the dragon fantasy genre. A good choice for elementary students who need middle grade reading material, but not middle grade content. Middle grade students (through high school and adults alike) will enjoy this book.
I did a read-aloud to four different third grade classes. The students were engaged and concerned about the characters. When the bell rang a collective "aww" rang out. "But wait! Can't we hear more?" was heard from every class. Several adults in the room said they wanted the book. One even said that she "never cares much for this sort of story, but this is one I can't wait to read myself. Is that wrong to want to read a kids book?" To that I answer: Not at all. Ms. Andre has a smooth writing style that is appropriate for children as well as adults. She doesn't dumb down the vocabulary, nor does she make it too difficult. Like Goldilocks, it is just right.
As an indie book tighter editing is needed. It does not detract from the overall writing though. It just caused me to stumble and had to reread, but that is just me. Examples (though not many) double words, unnecessary -ed ending, transposed letters.
Easy to overlook given the fun story that Ms. Andre has crafted. Definitely slated to be the first book in a series. This is nice to know because I really want to spend more time with these characters.

If I am not mistaken, this is a first novel for this author. I love dragons and have read many books containing them. This book was thoroughly enjoyable from the first page to the last. It is basically a story about a young man reaching his majority and having to deal with his family's and neighbors expectations. Part of those expectations is to raise a dragon, after his father finds an egg, and become a dragon Lord. Lady Di Andre is a very good storyteller and paints vivid pictures in your mind. I look forward to more books in this series and to furthering my acquaintance with her world.
